Acoustic windows and sash window systems use asymmetric double or triple laminated glazing, a wide air gap and an EPDM-magnetic sealed frame to deliver Rw 35-50 dB. They effectively block traffic noise for studios, city-centre housing, hotels and offices.
What is an acoustic window?
A standard double-glazed unit performs around Rw 28-30 dB. Acoustic windows optimise glass thickness, asymmetry (e.g. 6 mm + 10 mm), the air cavity (12-20 mm), gas fill (argon/krypton) and a PVB lamination layer to reach Rw 35-50 dB. Frame and sealing gaskets are decisive in preserving this performance.
Glazing build-ups
- Asymmetric IGU: 4+12+8 mm → Rw ~33 dB
- Laminated IGU: 6+12+8.4 lam → Rw ~36-38 dB
- Triple asymmetric laminated: 8+12+6+12+10.4 lam → Rw ~42-45 dB
- Double-shell (sash): two windows with a 50-150 mm cavity → Rw 48-55 dB
Frame and sealing
- PVC, aluminium or wood-composite profile
- Twin EPDM gaskets
- Magnetic-sealed frame (top class)
- Acoustic mastic to break the frame-wall bridge
- Certified window package (glass + frame + gaskets together)
Sash (double-shell) window
The sash window is a double-shell acoustic window with a 50-150 mm air cavity between two separate windows. It delivers Rw 48-55 dB professional performance and is the standard for control-room / live-room observation windows in studios.
Where it is used
- City-centre and main-road housing
- Hotel rooms and suites (star-rating acoustic standard)
- Hospital rooms and operating theatres
- Recording studio and mix-room observation glazing
- Cinemas and performance halls
- Offices with high noise exposure
What performance is needed?
- Quiet street: Rw 33-35 dB sufficient
- Main road: Rw 38-42 dB
- Motorway / metro line: Rw 42-48 dB
- Studio observation: Rw 48-55 dB (sash)
Installation
The frame is set into the opening; acoustic mastic seals the frame-wall bridge. The certified package (glass + gaskets + frame) is installed as a whole. Critical: a certified window can lose 5-10 dB through a non-certified frame/wall installation.
