It is not just reinforcing one wall — neighbour sound can come not only from the wall but also from side walls, slabs, ceilings and shared plumbing.
How neighbour sound travels
- Direct (party wall): the most common, easily identified path
- Slab above: footsteps, furniture movement (structural vibration)
- Ceiling below: music / TV bass
- Side walls (flanking): even with a perfect party wall, flanking can occur
- Shared screed: a continuous concrete screed across the floor

Flanking transmission — the often-missed critical element
